Hello!

Not Your Average Jane is a blog set up to give you ideas on not your average places to see, things to do, drink and eat all over the world.

THE LESSER-KNOWN CROATIA

THE LESSER-KNOWN CROATIA

We weren’t sure what to expect when travelling to Pula, as it’s not the usual place you hear about when people holiday in Croatia. The flights only cost us around £43 return, which we thought was great value for an easily accessible beach holiday! Pula itself is very small and there are limited restaurant choices but it is very quaint and has lots of pretty historical buildings. We spent most of the trip walking or cycling around the surrounding areas of Pula, visiting the various beaches, swimming off the rocks into the sea and eating pizza. The most enjoyable day was spent on one of the Brijuni Islands; Veliki Brijun. We caught a bus to Fazana where we loved the short ferry crossing over to the National Park.

When first stepping onto the island we decided to hire bikes, to make sure we were able to fit in exploring the whole island in just one day and also to get away from the crowds of people in the harbour. We went for a tandem bike as it was cheaper; this ended up leading to some hilarious moments throughout the day, including nearly being catapulted off the back over my boyfriends head when he didn’t warn me we were going over a huge bump. I would highly recommend if you like to have a good giggle!

We set off on the coastal path, coming across many deserted pebbly beaches where we enjoyed a dip in the crystal clear water. I would definitely suggest taking a pair of cheap flip flops to the beaches in Croatia with you, as it makes for a very uncomfortable walk down to the shore if you are barefoot. After drying off we had a little picnic but be sure to take food with you as the only place to eat is at the waterfront hotel. Back on our bikes again we came across a few archaeological sites but most exciting of all was the discovery of the walk-through safari. It was quite unusual to see fabulous animals such as zebras roaming around and not at all what you would expect on a small island just off the coast of Istria! From what I have read I understand that the animals were donated to president Tito of Yugoslavia in the 1970’s. The island has an interesting history, with it previously being owned by Yugoslavia and changing hands many times before that. The island is really well preserved and kept in its natural state with no large developments, making it such a beautiful landscape to explore. After we had dropped off our bike, we enjoyed a beer and glass of prosecco whilst waiting for our boat to arrive. We finished with a stroll into Fazana to try out the locally caught sea food for dinner.
