TEMPLES OF CHIANG MAI

TEMPLES OF CHIANG MAI

During your visit, make sure to spend a little time at this wonderful hilltop temple on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We took the most expensive option of a private taxi up to Doi Suthep rather than the sensible option of a songthaew, which would be much cheaper. At the base of the temple is a long climb up the dragon guarded steps, where you will be greeted by children in traditional Hmong costume. Expect to pay for any photos you take of them, money they will be sure to spend on not so traditional sweets.

The view from the top was spectacular, overlooking Chiang Mai, with a very Mediterranean feel. We explored the grounds where we came across the monks’ collection of comical pottery ornaments. The temple itself was stunning, with a large central gold stupa, which glimmered beautifully in the sunshine.

The second temple we visited whilst staying in Chiang Mai was Wat Sri Suphan, away from the main tourist drag and in the silversmith district. This temple was much more peaceful and less crowded, in fact not crowded at all. In the grounds was a workshop where you could watch craftsmen hand beat the decorative silver panels. The silver temple was awe inspiring, unfortunately as a woman you were not allowed inside, but sitting in the grounds and looking at the temple felt very spiritual.
