ESCAPING MARRAKECH FOR THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS

ESCAPING MARRAKECH FOR THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS

Our favourite day of the whole trip was when we left Marrakech! I suppose travelling from a city to a city doesn’t feel much like a holiday, so we have much more fun doing adventurous things, like exploring the unique landscape of the country. Our Riad organised a private car and guide for our day out in the mountains which was quite pricey but well worth it. Along the hour drive to the waterfalls we had a short stop to check out a local market as it’s always interesting to see how different cultures live.

Once we arrived at the Berber village, we were greeted by our local guide who walked us along a busy dirt track to the first, and most impressive waterfall. It was very busy with tourists taking a dip to cool off but beautiful never the less. A lot of people only go to the first cascade but we decided to pay the Berber guide a little bit of extra money for him to take us up to see all 7 of the waterfalls; best decision we made! We spent about 3 hours, I wouldn’t say walking, more like scrambling up the large rocks to view each waterfall. The guide was very helpful and always gave me a hand up the larger boulders. The views looking back down into the valley were spectacular and it was so peaceful up there as there was no one else around. I have to admit, the funniest moment was when I had to relieve myself behind a larger boulder and to my surprise there was a mountain goat that had stopped in its path to watch me, haha! Other wildlife we saw on the way up included monkeys! The descent was much quicker, as you can imagine. My boyfriend bought himself a nice pair of leather slippers, then we enjoyed a tagine sat on a table and chairs placed in the river, water up to our ankles. On the drive back to Marrakech, we were so exhausted after trekking up into the mountains we fell asleep.
